A group of young researchers from Sri Sivananda Balalaya, Nitin Srirang, Karthick, Keerthana, Hamsa Varthini and Sri Sai Kamalini, presented a Science Project “On use of alcoholic distillery effluents as rich fertilizers for crops” at the District level of National Children’s Science Congress – 2010 and it was adjudged as the best at the junior level. The team collected samples of effluents from Trichy Distillery and tried the diluted effluents as manure on different crops and found that it promoted good growth. Their finding was that the high quality of NPK in the effluents enriched the soil fertility and the distillery effluent could be used as fertilizer instead of being wasted. Also, this practice could reduce the use of artificial fertilizers. As an extension of the project the young researcher met the farmers nearby and spread the message of using the distillery effluent as fertilizer. Ms.Sathya, the Science teacher of Balalaya was the project Coordinator.
It is another feather in the cap of their young researchers that their project was selected at the State Level, and is presented at Children’s National Science Congress – 2010 held on 27 December, 2010 at Chennai.
Our congrats to the team!
